National female-led plumbing firm, Stopcocks Women Plumbers, is launching its new franchise scheme.

The company’s announcement aligns with its continued aims to make the industry landscape a level playing field for men and women. Founder, Hattie Hasan, said: “The fact is, there still aren’t enough women plumbers and their businesses are mostly too new or too small to take on new plumbers and mentor them.”

While much is made of the number of women coming into the construction industry, Hattie said: “They’re a tiny proportion and we have had to make a big noise to be heard ourselves.

“We have basically been doing this in the wilderness for years. Now we are calling on the industry, investors and collaborators to help too.”

When Stopcocks was founded in 1990, its vision was of an industry where both women and men were able to train, gain skills and competence, qualify and work as plumbers, and where customers had access to skilled tradespeople they could rely on.

The new Stopcocks franchise is open to qualified female plumbers in jobs wanting to take control of their own lives, as well as those trainees coming to the end of their training.

”Women Plumbers are role models by default, and by being self-employed they become visible to girls and women who never even considered plumbing as a career.”

Stopcocks’ mission is to continue raising the profile and numbers of women plumbers and improving standards of customer care within plumbing. It also wants to encourage skilful and qualified female plumbers to support new plumbers.
