Plumber Hannah Spencer wins by-election to become Green Party’s new MP

Hannah Spencer, a plumber from Manchester, has been announced as the new MP of the Green Party.

She becomes the Green Party’s first ever Westminster by-election winner, after victory in Gorton and Denton, Greater Manchester, with an apology to her customers for any potential work they were hoping to book in.

She told media: “I think I might have to cancel the work that you had booked in, because I’m heading to Parliament. And when I get there, I will make space for everyone doing jobs like mine, we will finally get a seat at the table.”

Hannah entered the plumbing industry after leaving education aged 16. This year, she had returned to college to start a full-time plastering course, the BBC reported. Alongside her training, she began campaigning in Gorton and Denton.

In 2024, Hannah stood as the Green Party’s mayoral election candidate for Greater Manchester. She will now sit alongside Siân Berry, Adrian Ramsay, Carla Denyer and Ellie Chowns, as the Green Party’s fifth MP.
