In response to the government’s target to install 53 million gas and electricity smart meters by 2020, Eastleigh College has launched a brand new smart metering course to train gas engineers in the latest technology.

The course has been awarded ‘Platinum’ status by the Energy Efficiency Independent Assessment Service, which is the highest level of accreditation ahead of Gold.

The ten-week course, usually split over a period of six months in between work experience, addresses how to replace gas and electric meters, in addition to basic pipework skills, adhering to industry regulations, and customer service skills.

The custom-built workshop bays re-create scenarios found in the real world, such as working in enclosed spaces like staircases, and working with old dial-gauge meters. Students will also become Gas Safe registered through the college’s industry renowned Gas Assessment Centre.

Smart meters encourage efficiency in the home by displaying real-time gas and electric usage, in addition to providing automatic meter readings, which helps the customer to monitor their usage more effectively and potentially save money on their bill.
