The latest Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) data has revealed last month was the best April on record for small-scale renewables. Ian Rippin, CEO at MCS, commented on the data.

Last month was the best April for certified installations in MCS history, totaling more than 26,000 – a 22% increase on April 2024.

According to the MCS Data Dashboard, there were over 4,700 certified heat pump installations last month alone. This brings the total for 2025 so far to over 20,000, as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) – which requires the installation to be MCS certified – continues to support homeowners in making the transition to low-carbon heating. It is the three year anniversary of the BUS on 23 May, which has seen the number of applications to the Scheme rise over the last 12 months.

Solar PV also had a strong month, with 18,500 certified installations in April. This was a 19% increase on April 2024, building on the strong start to the year for solar, which has had the best start to a year for certified installations in over a decade this year.

Battery storage continues its record-breaking start to the year with almost 2,900 certified installations in April – up 108% from April 2024 and bringing the total number of installations to over 36,000. After a record-breaking 2024, it’s great to see the adoption of low-carbon alternatives is continuing to grow at pace. As this momentum builds and installations are delivered at volume, it’s crucial to prioritise ‘delivered quality’ to strengthen consumer confidence in home-grown energy. That is at the core of the redeveloped MCS.
