The Industrial and Commercial Heating Equipment Association (ICOM) has called for entries for the ICOM Apprentice of the Year Award 2026.

According to the association, the award celebrates the next generation of engineers who will help shape the future of the commercial heating sector.

The 2025 award was won by Hayden Openshaw, maintenance and operations engineering apprentice at Fulton Boiler Works GB. A statement said his dedication to continuous learning and professional development impressed the judges.

Since winning the award, Hayden has completed his commercial gas qualifications, gained additional LPG certification and undertaken specialist steam system training. He has progressed to work independently as a commercial heating engineer.

Hayden said: “Winning the ICOM Apprentice of the Year Award was a real honour.  My apprenticeship has given me the opportunity to earn while I learn, develop practical skills and build a career in an industry that offers so many opportunities.  I’d encourage anyone considering a hands-on engineering career to explore apprenticeships – it’s the best decision I ever made.”

Steve McConnell, director of ICOM, added: “The commercial heating sector depends on attracting and developing talented people who can meet the challenges of an increasingly complex and technology-driven industry. Apprenticeships are one of the most effective ways of building the skills and competence our sector needs for the future.

“Every year we are impressed by the calibre of entrants to the ICOM Apprentice of the Year Award. The competition provides an excellent opportunity for businesses to recognise the achievements of their apprentices and showcase the investment they are making in the industry’s future workforce. I would encourage all ICOM members to consider entering their apprentices for the 2026 award.”

The 2025 finalists also included Connor Clewes of Worcester Bosch and Daniels Manfelds of Cochran.
