One of our readers, Clive King, has been in touch to voice his thoughts on the way career paths are formed.

I read with interest your article on the lack of apprenticeship take-ups. It is no surprise to me that this has happened and is still happening. I have been saying this for years and it can be covered in one word, ‘SNOBBERY’.

To improve the situation, the industry should bypass the teachers and lecturers and go straight to the children at school. On the whole, teachers do not like to upset the parents of the children they are teaching, as it makes things awkward for them in their professional lives. Can you imagine at a careers evening, the teacher advising the pupil to take on an apprenticeship instead of carving out a career at university? Blood would probably be shed for the teacher even suggesting it. And yet, the child would probably end up with a much better, well-paid job, be more outgoing and happy in their work, and gain a sense of achievement every day. On the flip side university will cost the parents an inordinate amount of money, but they never consider that until it is too late.

I rest my case.
