Is it acceptable for rainwater ‘run off’ from an MRF waste site incorporating an anaerobic digester to be discharged into a highways drainage system and then onto local water courses and land?

Question from Les Barratt, via e-mail:
Is it acceptable for rainwater ‘run off’ from an MRF waste site incorporating an anaerobic digester to be discharged into a highways drainage system and then onto local water courses and land? The site will be frequented by at least 80 lorries per day.

Answer from Steve Harris – technical services engineer at Wavin:
Rainwater should not be going into the anaerobic digester at all as it is designed for sewage waste only. It will need to go through an oil interceptor, but this needs checking by the local water authority before anything is done.
