These properties rely on alternatives such as oil, electricity and solid fuel for heating and hot water. Existing boilers are often inherited with a property and are usually replaced like-for-like when the original comes to the end of its lifecycle. But when a boiler breaks down, it presents installers with a lucrative opportunity to offer customers a cleaner, more environmentally fuel option like Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). For homeowners, LPG offers all of the convenience of mains gas for heating and hot water, making an LPG boiler an ideal choice for those that are used to being on-grid. Greenest fossil fuel LPG is also the greenest fossil fuel available, emitting around 20% less carbon dioxide per kWh than oil, making it ideal for off-grid customers who are concerned about their environmental impact. There is a range of storage options available for LPG, from above ground tanks to more discreet options like underground tanks or cylinder packs. The LPG supplier will install the chosen LPG storage system, meaning that installers only need to complete internal work including boiler installation. Automatic top-up technology is also available on tanks to inform the supplier when gas levels are running low. This automatically orders a re-fill, giving peace of mind to the customer, while eliminating the need for monitoring gas levels. Replacing an oil-fired boiler for an LPG system is easier and faster than installers may think. With technology There is a range of storage options for LPG, from above ground tanks to more discreet options like underground tanks or cylinder packs that is almost identical to mains-gas combi boilers, installers should find LPG boilers familiar to install. LPG boilers are also often more compact than oil boilers and can be wall mounted, meaning they take up less space in the home. Where an LPG boiler can be installed in around a day, fitting an oil boiler may take a day-and-a-half. This is because the installer doesn’t have to worry about air in the system or connecting the filter when working with gas. While there are factory ready LPG boilers available, some manufacturers also offer conversion kits to make their boilers compatible with LPG. In some instances, a boiler may need to be reprogrammed during conversion which may need to be completed by the manufacturer, but most boilers can be quickly and easily converted from mains gas to LPG on-site by the installer. With an LPG boiler often costing less than an oil boiler, switching can be a more cost-effective option for customers too. Aside from savings on the initial outlay, the increased efficiency means that customers can enjoy long-term savings on their energy bills. Switching to one of the latest, high efficiency LPG boilers can help homeowners to lower gas consumption, with efficiencies of 90% or more easily achievable. Just like mains gas, LPG condensing boilers also utilise the hot flue gases that are otherwise wasted in standard boilers, providing a highly efficient method of generating heat and hot water. For homeowners this means lower carbon emissions and reduced energy consumption, which will equal lower household fuel bills. In addition to LPG boilers being more cost effective, lifetime ownership costs of an LPG system can actually be lower than an oil system. For example, if the oil tank needs replacing, the customer will have to buy a new tank which can cost as much as £2,000. In contrast, LPG tanks are available free of charge and LPG suppliers will insure and maintain the tank for a nominal monthly cost. This means if there’s an issue with the tank, the homeowner can simply let their supplier know and they will fix or replace it. With a range of incentive schemes, it isn’t just customers that can benefit from the installation of a new LPG boiler. For example, installers can also earn up to £250 in cash when they register their customer lead with Calor as part of the Calor Installer Scheme. Many of the leading boiler manufacturers also offer their own incentive schemes. recommending the switch to their customers www.hpmmag.com September 2017 enquiry number 130 “Replacing an oil-fired boiler for an LPG system is easier and faster than installers may think”
