HPM
REACHING
FOR THE TOP
“I still have so much to learn, but if you work
hard and consistently anything is possible and
that I could one day lead a successful company”
Enthusiasm and passion pays
off for Apprentice of the Year
HPM speaks to 21-year-old Callum Megarry, Worcester Bosch’s Apprentice of the Year,
to find out more about his experience as an apprentice and how he impressed the
judges to take the much coveted crown.
The future is bright for Callum Megarry, Worcester Bosch’s Apprentice of the Year
WHEN AND WHY DID YOU BECOME
AN APPRENTICE?
“I became a plumbing and heating
apprentice in 2016, but I was actually
training to be a teacher before that.
I’m glad I didn’t continue on that route
because it just wasn’t for me. I am a handson
type of person and being stuck in the
classroom never felt right.
“When I figured out that teaching
didn’t suit me, it was back to the drawing
board and trying to discover what I would
enjoy and how to make a career out of
it. No one in my family is a plumber or
heating engineer so I didn’t have anyone
to follow, but as my dad has always been
quite good at DIY, I often found myself
helping him out around the house.
“I thought it would be a good idea to
make use of my practical skills and do
something like an apprenticeship, I’m so
glad I did.”
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT
YOUR APPRENTICESHIP?
“For me the main attraction is being able
to do a lot of learning on the job and
then having a go. I meet lots of different
heating and plumbing engineers on a
daily basis so I can always ask questions
and learn from experience. I like being
able to get out and about too, you are
often working at different locations and
get to do all sorts.
“My apprenticeship is with WPJ Heating,
in West London, and it’s very varied which
I love. I’m really lucky to work with such
an experienced and established company
who give me lots of opportunities to
learn and progress. I do everything from
helping with full bathroom installations
to boiler installations, fitting controls and
general repairs.”
DO YOU FEEL POSITIVE ABOUT
YOUR FUTURE IN THE INDUSTRY?
“I feel really positive. In two years, I’ll have
finished my apprenticeship so I’ll be fully
qualified and really confident by then. I
feel like there is no shortage of work out
there and the skills you learn to become a
qualified plumbing and heating engineer
can take you anywhere, all over the world
if you want.
“I don’t think it will always be easy, as
there’s lots of change and new things to
learn in this industry, but I’m ready for the
challenge.”
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN
TEN YEARS?
“I’d like to imagine that in ten years I’ll
be running my own company. I’m in no
rush right now as I still have so much to
learn, but I think if you work hard and
consistently anything is possible and that I
could one day lead a successful company.
“I’ll start out solo one day and then if
that all goes to plan it would be excellent
to recruit as the client-base expands.
Knowing that I’ve personally gained so
much from an apprenticeship, I would
absolutely take on an apprentice myself.”
FINALLY, HOW DOES IT FEEL
TO HAVE WON WORCESTER’S
COMPETITION?
“This is such an achievement for me,
it feels really good to have Worcester
recognise my enthusiasm and passion.
I also really enjoyed entering all of the
challenges, especially being able to show
off my creativity with copper. I made a
copper candle holder, it really tested my
metal bending, joining and clipping skills.
It was a challenge but it looked great once
it had been polished up.”
The search for the Apprentice of the
Year (AOTY) began in October 2017
and was open to Level 2 and Level 3
apprentices in the plumbing and heating
industry.
Callum was awarded a range of prizes,
