CIPHE BACKS CALLS FOR MASTER
Proposals by the Social Market Foundation (SMF) for the title of ‘Master
Craftsman’ to be adopted to raise the status of apprenticeships have been
supported within the sector.
Its independent report suggested those who complete apprenticeships should be
allowed to call themselves craftsman or craftswoman – putting their qualifications
on a par with university degrees.
The report went on to suggest those holding the most prestigious
apprenticeships might be addressed as master craftsman or master craftswoman
in the same way that people who complete a PhD are then entitled to be called
Kevin Wellman, pictured below, CEO of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing
and Heating Engineering (CIPHE), said: “The CIPHE supports all measures
to encourage apprenticeships, especially in the fields of engineering. We
wholeheartedly agree that quality apprenticeships deliver highly trained and
skilled individuals, who must be seen as being on a par with those holding
academic qualifications. Indeed, recognising excellence in our chosen vocation is a
very practical way of maintaining and raising standards.”
TIMOLEON TEAM ANNOUNCES
Underfloor heating company Timoleon has marked a decade in business with a
management buyout (MB0) and new acquisition.
Following the recent MBO, a new management team has created Ridgespear Limited
and acquired all the shares in Timoleon.
The changes have seen Rex Ingram retire from the business and existing directors
Craig Parker, Andy Gaydon, Matt Fairweather, along with original co-founder Darren
Trivett, pictured above, take complete ownership.
Ridgespear also announced an immediate buyout of Tailored Heat Supplies (THS),
which specialises in large commercial projects. This will see the managing director and
former owner of THS, John Trenell, join the Ridgespear board as new commercial director.
With the buyout of THS, in addition to Timoleon and the well-established OMNIE and
CircofloPro brand operations, Ridgespear has outgrown its 20,000 square foot premises
and was also seeking a new site for “significant expansion”, a statement added.
Darren Trivett said: “We know that there are lots of ways of doing underfloor heating,
our focus is manufacturing excellent products to help those who want a simple, easy to
install, solution and to those who want to employ renewable energy knowing that the
system will work as expected.
“In order to continue doing this we are now not only seeking a much larger facility in
the Exeter area, but we are also expanding in our other locations in Carlisle and Poland.
These are very exciting times for our business.”
BOILER PLUS REVIEW
A year since the enactment of
Boiler Plus many installers and
manufacturers are waiting with
interest to hear the results of BEIS’
Last month marked a year since
standards came into force, but
it remained unclear when BEIS,
the government’s Department
for Business, Energy & Industrial
Strategy, would be releasing its
promised one-year review.
Mark Wilkins, head of training
and external affairs at Valliant,
said the review should consider its
wider scope, water quality issues
and hydraulic balancing in order to
build on the initial successes of Boiler
He said: “Whilst some installers
were already well in advance of the
requirements of Boiler Plus, it has
been a step change for others. There
was also resistance from some to
complying with the requirements of
Boiler Plus and BEIS had to ultimately
issue a definitive statement to bring
them in line.
“Similarly, the precise definition
of ‘smart thermostat’ initially caused
discussion and was eventually
clarified by documents such as
the HHIC’s ‘Boiler Plus additional
guidance’. However, the legislation
has now widely been embraced by
both installers and manufacturers,
resulting in an increased emphasis on
energy efficiency across the board –
which can only be a positive thing.”
