Homeowners must ensure that wood is dried suffi ciently before it is used in a clean-burning stove
The Energy Labelling Directive was introduced for wood burners on January 1 this year.
But what are its implications and what does the future hold in terms of regulation of the
sector? Ian Sams, commercial director of Specfl ue, has the answer.
All stoves that provide heat into the
room in which they are installed,
including wood burning
appliances, have had to be ‘ecolabelled’
since the beginning of this year.
The labelling – similar to what we see
with household appliances such as washing
machines, dishwashers and fridges – gives
customers a clearer view of the effi ciency
and output of their stove.
Manufacturers must include a
printed label in the stove packaging
with a minimum of information in the
instructions or on a specifi cation sheet.
Advertisements, brochures and
technical material must include the A to G
energy effi ciency class for that model.
The average effi ciency of a modern stove
is in excess of 70%, with the best stoves
achieving 80% plus, which means that
modern stoves will typically be in band A
and A+.
Installers will need to develop a good
understanding of the requirements to
ensure commissioned installations comply
with the rules.
ENERGY LABEL GENERATOR
To help ensure the new regulations are
met, the European Commission has
created an Energy Label Generator for
manufacturers and installers. They simply

complemented by Ecodesign, a Europeanwide
programme to improve effi ciency
and lower emissions.
Ecodesign – which covers a wide range
of emissions including particulates, carbon
dioxide (CO2), NOx, OGC (other gaseous
carbon) and carbon monoxide – is due
to come into force in 2022 for solid fuel
stoves.
However, members of the Stove Industry
Alliance (SIA) have decided to get ahead
of the game by introducing stoves that
meet the lower emission limits now as
Ecodesign Ready appliances. From 2020,
they will only produce new fi reboxes that
satisfy Ecodesign.
Ecodesign Ready stoves reduce
emissions by 90% compared with an open
fi re. Open fi res basically give off 100g
of particulate for a kilogram of smoke;
in an Ecodesign Ready stove the level of
particulate is less than 10g making them
