Revolutionising the flux industry Fluxing pipes has never been an easy task, whether it’s getting covered in stains, burning your fingers, or just having a set of once clean brushes, ruined by the process. The idea of the Fluxuator came to Dominic Fowls after his years of working as a plumber’s mate for his nephew and Gas Safe Engineer, Lee Ottaway. Dominic would watch plumbers getting covered in flux, dropping brushes and contaminating pot after pot of flux, and the disasters that ensued led him to thinking there must be an easier way. HPM spoke to the team behind Fluxuator to find out more about its aim to revolutionise the flux industry, and change the way that plumbers flux in the future. Dominic wanted to create a way to make fluxing pipes cleaner, easier, quicker, safer and more efficient. It would be a flux applicator that would terminate problems caused by the outdated pot of flux and brush system. Inspired after watching ‘The Terminator,’ and with the product having a similar purpose (of sorts!), Dominic named it, ‘The Fluxuator.’ Unsure on how to progress, Dominic sat on his idea for seven years. It wasn’t until an acquaintance of his, Andrew Zacharias, helped him through a tough time, that the idea started to gain momentum again. The experience had made the two of them grow close, and Dominic decided to confide in him with his idea. Andrew, although unfamiliar with the plumbing industry, loved the concept and decided to invest. He spent the next few months researching and educating himself, and found that there was nothing like the Fluxuator available on the marketplace. As soon as they realised there was a gap in the market, they began to construct a crude mock-up of the product using melted plastic beads. The duo then went on to form a team, contact a patent solicitor, and trademark the product name. Using their homemade mock-up, along with an array of rough sketches, they showed Bang Creations (their design team) how the product should look. The pair said the product needed to be ergonomically designed for comfortable grip, quick to use, and deliver minimum flux. However, it also needed to give maximum coverage, be robust enough to withstand heavy-duty on-site, as well as contamination free. Two years later, and after rigorous testing by both Bang Creations and Lee, the Fluxator hit the market under company named, Dazcom. The Fluxuator click system safely delivers the minimum required flux to give maximum coverage to the pipe and not your skin. The 75g container of Copalux is capable of delivering over 500 measured applications with no waste. It also cannot be contaminated, as it screws to the bottom of the washable head system. The comfortable and efficient design allows plumbers to get in to hard to reach places with one hand. It also has a brush in the back of the head for all those traditionalists out there. It’s available in either 15ml or 22ml packs and includes one refill. A one-size-fits-both refill can also be purchased separately. The Fluxuator will be launched at the PHEX+ show, taking place on May 17 and 18 at Alexandra Palace in London. There will be a special show discount, and the Fluxuator will be available for pre-order from then on, at both the show and online, via: www.fluxuator.co.uk Advertisement Feature 66 TOOLS & EQUIPMENT www.hpmmag.com May 2017 enquiry number 350
