‘Retro Boiler’ label launched A ‘Retro Boiler’ label scheme has been launched by the Heating & Hotwater Industry Council (HHIC). The HHIC estimates there are approximately nine million inefficient boilers in the UK. A large proportion of these are over 20 years old and would be classed as ‘zombie boilers’- boilers with old technology that never seem to die, yet remain highly inefficient. The scheme will see registered gas engineers issue the energy efficiency label on all non-condensing boilers with a permanent pilot light, when visiting homes to undertake servicing or maintenance work. The aim is to increase consumer awareness of boiler efficiency with the hope that this will result in inefficient and costly boilers being replaced with more efficient models. “A growing number of consumer electrical products such as washing machines, fridges and vacuum cleaners feature an energy label, which helps consumers to quickly assess how energy efficient their appliances are and, therefore, how much it will cost to operate,” said Stewart Clements, director, HHIC. “The heating industry recognised this and under the ‘Retro Boiler’ label scheme will be providing a similar label for older inefficient models. For the second year in a row, Plumb Center has been named the number one rated bathroom brand in the Which? customer survey 2016. The survey included some of the leading companies in the market and rated Plumb Center 30% ahead of another well-known brand. The survey, which was carried out in May 2016, collected the views of 2,391 Which? members who had installed a bathroom in the last five years. Customers gave Plumb Center a five-star rating on customer service, quality of products and finish, and a “Replacing a Band E or below boiler with an A rated one could see gas bills reduced by approximately £150 annually and a saving of 0.7 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year for the typical UK household.” The scheme has been endorsed by Baroness Neville-Rolfe, Minister of State at the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy. “This is a fine example of the collaboration and initiative that makes the UK gas boiler market one of the largest and most valuable in the world,” she said. Richard Harvey, category director for heating and plumbing at Plumb Center, added: “We are in favour of any credible initiative that contributes to raising general awareness of the operating cost and environmental burden of old boilers. “The retro label provides an easy way for installers to start a conversation with a homeowner about their aging boiler. Consumers are now used to seeing energy labels on products they buy so this is something they can easily relate to. As a completely voluntary scheme, it’s up to each installer to decide if it’s something they can use, but if it provokes a constructive conversation then I’d argue its use has been a worthwhile exercise.” four-star rating for value for money. Scores were also awarded on how satisfied customers were with the brand and whether or not they would recommend it to friend. Plumb Center offers installers and its customers access to professional advice and guidance on a wide range of products from staff through its Plumb Center Bathroom Showrooms. The service gives installers the chance to show customers products in-situ, and includes a free digital design service, ordering and delivery. If customers don’t already have an installer, the showroom team can point them in the right direction of a number of local installers via its Preferred Partnership scheme. 8 NEWS DESK Salamander Pumps is strengthening its commitment to customer service, innovation and product development, with an in-house apprenticeship programme that has seen its first student graduate into a permanent role. The latest figures from the Builders Merchants Building Index appear to buck the downward construction trend reported by the ONS last month. Total merchant sales in Q3 2016 were up by 3.8% on the same period last year, with total ex-vat sales of £1.43 billion compared to £1.39 billion in 2015. • Figures published by the Heating and Hotwater Industry Council (HHIC) show that sales of domestic gas boilers in September 2016 fell by 4.3% in comparison with September 2015, with year to date figures showing a fall of 0.7% compared with 2015. Stewart Clements, director of HHIC, said: “It looks like the slowdown in the property market over the past few months is having an impact upon sales, in particular residential property transactions in Q3 showed a marked decrease compared to 2015, despite yearto date increases from activity earlier in 2016. “New build activity is also lower than expected, both for starts and completions, which is a worry for the overall construction sector.” • The Heating Installer Awards is accepting entries.
