5 EDITOR’S COMMENT “...the ‘Retro Boiler’ scheme is voluntary, so if installers don’t want to take part, they don’t have to” Energy labels have appeared on a multitude of electrical products, including washing machines and fridges, for ages so the introduction of a ‘Retro Boiler’ label scheme by the Heating and Hot Water Industry Council last month seems like a logical step. The scheme will see registered gas engineers issue the energy efficiency label on all non-condensing boilers with a permanent pilot light, when visiting homes to undertake servicing or maintenance work. The aim is to increase consumer awareness of boiler efficiency with the hope that this will result in inefficient and costly boilers being replaced with more efficient models. Despite endorsements from a number of leading boiler manufacturers, government ministers and Plumb Center, the news hasn’t gone down to well with the installers who will be responsible for acquiring and distributing the labels. They have taken to Twitter to question the scheme querying the extra costs associated with the labels, that it will worry pensioners by ‘sticking a label on the boiler and telling them they're wasting money to use it, and the fact ‘there are better measures and cheaper that should be addressed first’. But they need not worry. The scheme is voluntary, so if installers don’t want to take part, they don’t have to. Trade associations, merchants and manufacturers know how hard an installer works and don’t want to add to their workload by insisting they join in. If it ‘provokes the constructive conversation’ that Plumb Center is suggesting, then that can only be positive for the industry as a whole. Hopefully the main topic of conversation in the lead up to the festive season will be HPM’s annual Christmas Competition. Once again, one lucky reader can win a dozen prizes. See the double page spread on pages two and three for details of what goodies are offered and where. As usual, a personal thank you to every company who donated a prize – your generosity is much appreciated. All that remains is for the HPM team to thank every reader and writer for your valuable support during 2016 and to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
