30 CIPHE COLUMN Getting technical This summer, the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering appointed a new technical director, Paul Harmer. Here he explains how he has concentrated on developing a new series of educational material that tackles a variety of industry related topics “Having joined the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineers (CIPHE) this summer, the last six months have been extremely busy yet productive ones from where I sit within the Institute. From day one, networking has been vital for making connections with manufacturers and the wider industry and I have spent a lot of time travelling around the country as a result. Getting on the road on a weekly basis has meant I have been able to meet as many Industrial Associates (IA) as possible in a relatively short space of time, liaising with marketing teams to talk about the products we are developing. The Institute’s focus on education and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) has been a key topic of discussion, in addition to the CIPHE’s ‘Proud to be a Professional’ campaign. “As a result, within the first three months of developing our ‘smarttalk’ and ‘techtalk’ concepts we signed up seven IA members, including Worcester, Bosch Group, Altecnic and AKW to get involved. These educational programmes cover a range of subjects that are currently being talked about by manufacturers and their technical departments, which members are interested in and can benefit from. For example, our ‘techtalk’ activity – in the form of written articles and videos – focuses on the whole industry and is designed to communicate with all levels; catering for everyone from apprentices to business owners, designers and chief engineers within companies. “We have also launched ‘smarttalk’, which concentrates on three areas – legal, finance and marketing. They not only focus on the importance of developing practical skills, but exploring what’s required of people from a business and legal perspective too. For example, the company we’re working with to provide insurance for our members will soon be delivering a ‘smarttalk’. “As an extension of both of these initiatives, the CIPHE’s newly developed ‘techtalk – the apprentice’ will involve the Institute going out and about to meet apprentices with a view to delivering content that is of value for people just entering the industry too. We’re keen to interview apprentices to understand, capture and share what it is they enjoy about their job with a view to encouraging other young people to consider a career in the plumbing, heating and bathroom business. “During 2017, we will be proactively approaching and collaborating with the IA members in order to place varied content in every issue of the CIPHE’s own magazine – the P&HE Journal. An emphasis on education will involve continued efforts to increase the number of online learning modules on our website, as well as working more closely with colleges to provide additional support in order to invest in developing more professional apprentices and installers of the future. Looking at the bigger picture, all activity is designed to feed into education, whereby the Institute will be creating a variety of CPD material, which will also incorporate some 3D interactive training modules. ” If you would like to become a member of the CIPHE, contact the team via email: info@ciphe.org.uk or call 01708 472791. enquiry number 121 How much are Worcester’s vouchers worth?
