‘Cowboy’ days are over for Martin

Martin CornellA former rodeo rider from Bognor Regis is taking his first steps towards a new and very different career as a fully-trained plumber, with renewable energy skills.

Martin Cornell, 41, spent 15 years as a western rider, travelling all over the country and earning the title of UK Champion back in 1994.

But in June last year, Martin took his interest in plumbing and electrics a step further by enrolling on a course with New Career Skills, who are helping him to gain the training and qualifications he requires and helping him to start his own business.

Martin was impressed by the Southampton-based training centre he visited and now aims to be self-employed by the end of the year, with the hope of starting a second course.

“I’m really enjoying the course, I’m due to finish in November but hope to complete it even sooner,” said Martin. “Once I’m finished I’d like to set up my own plumbing company and then go back to New Career Skills to train in renewable plumbing. I think the green-side of things is going to be a big market and it’s something I’d like to be trained to do.”

Martin will get help in achieving his goal of being his own boss, as New Career Skills runs workshops for students and gives them advice on setting up their own firms. The training provider has also set up a dedicated website for students and graduates - www.ncscareersearch.co.uk - which gives them unrivaled access to essential business services and discounts, links to potential employers, details of vacancies and professional development opportunities.

Martin advises those thinking about a career change to seriously consider a similar route and said: “Sit down and talk about it with your other half. You’ll need support from friends, family and employer and it will be hard. But you’ll reap the rewards in the end and you’ll also enjoy it.”

Students wanting to find out more about how New Career Skills can help them can call 0800 037 99 34 or visit www.newcareerskills.co.uk.
